Buchan Offshore Wind submits offshore consent applications
20 August 2025
Buchan Offshore Wind is the developer of a major floating offshore wind farm 75 km to the northeast of Fraserburgh on the Aberdeenshire coast. It secured the seabed development rights from Crown Estate Scotland as part of the ScotWind leasing process in 2022.
With an anticipated capacity of close to 1GW and a connection date of 2033, the project would have up to 70 turbines and offers the potential to power more than one million homes.
Its development would see more than £900 million invested in Scotland’s manufacturing sector and supply chain, with around 2,900 jobs in Scotland at the peak of construction and close to 300 ongoing jobs during operation.
“Submission of our offshore consent application is a critical milestone in unlocking the significant inward investment this ambitious project will bring, and we would encourage everyone with an interest in the project to view and comment on our application.” - Project Director Clare Lavelle.

About Buchan Offshore Wind
Buchan Offshore Wind is being developed by a joint venture comprising BayWa r.e., a global renewable energy business with offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh; Elicio, an experienced Belgian offshore wind developer, owner and operator; and BW Ideol, a proven floating technology leader and international floating wind project co-developer.
The alliance brings together three companies with highly significant, relevant and complementary expertise, which has the potential to accelerate the development of floating wind and bring significant levels of employment to Scotland through its commitment to local manufacturing of the wind turbines’ concrete foundations.
In January 2022 the consortium was successful in securing an Option Agreement from Crown Estate Scotland for the project in the ScotWind leasing process. The Buchan Offshore Wind project also has a
grid connection agreement with the National Energy System Operator for an underground cable connection in the Peterhead area.
With a capacity of around 1GW, the project will put Scotland at the forefront of floating wind and bring significant benefits for Scotland’s supply chain, skills and employment opportunities. Our commitment to build the project’s unique concrete floating foundations in Scotland will create Scottish manufacturing jobs to deliver the project.
Earlier this year BW Ideol received Basic Design Certification from DNV for their 15 MW + platform, confirming the technical suitability of its floating foundation for large-scale deployment.
